Investment Corner: What Are You Leaving for the Next Generation?

Picture a family gathering in December.

Someone is arguing about where everyone should spend Christmas. Someone is asking why everything has suddenly become so expensive. The younger ones are moving between rooms, eating whatever they can find and asking for money before they head back home. Then, as these conversations tend to do, someone starts talking about the future.

Who is getting married next? Who is moving abroad? Who has started a business? Which university should the youngest one attend? Who is buying land?

We spend a lot of time planning for the next thing. But how often do we stop to think about the people coming after us?

The next generation will inherit more than our names, family stories and old photographs. They will inherit the decisions we make today, including the financial ones.

Think About the 10-Year-Old

There is something strange about watching someone grow up. One minute, they are struggling to pronounce your name. The next, they are taller than you, asking questions about university, careers and money.

Now imagine being able to go back to the day they were ten and knowing what you know now – you may probably tell yourself to start earlier.

We cannot predict what university will cost ten years from now. We cannot know whether the next generation will want to become doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs or something that does not even exist yet. We can, however, expect that opportunities will come with financial demands.

That is why starting early matters.

The “We’ll Sort It Out Later” Problem

Most of us have a list of things we plan to sort out eventually. Investments we want to make…money we want to put aside or even things we want to buy.

There is always a reasonable excuse to move one thing to next month. Then next month becomes next year.

Before long, the child you thought had “plenty of time” is applying to university and the conversation has changed from “we should start planning” to “how are we going to pay for this?”.

Long-term financial planning rarely feels urgent when the goal is years away. That is exactly why it is easy to postpone. Starting does not have to mean having everything figured out. It can simply mean identifying a goal, deciding what you can commit and giving the plan time to grow.

For those thinking about building towards the next generation’s future, United Capital’s range of mutual funds includes options such as the United Capital Children Investment Fund, which can help you invest towards longer-term goals.

You can also explore Estate Planning, which provides a structured way to organise and pass on assets, with options including an Education Trust for specific education goals.

The bigger question, though, is not what product you choose. It is: what do you want to make easier for the next generation?

Education? A first business? A home? The freedom to take an opportunity without starting completely from scratch? There is no single answer.

Someone You Have Not Met Yet

Perhaps the most interesting thing about planning for the next generation is that you may not even know exactly who will benefit from the decisions you make today.

It could be your child. A grandchild you have not met yet. The niece who currently spends every family gathering glued to her phone but might one day build a company everyone knows.

That is the beauty of long-term planning. You are deciding today for a version of your family that you have not met yet. And if you are looking to get started, you can explore your investment options and manage your investments through InvestNow, making it easier to put some of those plans into motion.

So, as September rolls in and the year begins to feel a little more serious, perhaps the question is not only what you can still achieve before December.

What can you put in motion before December that will still matter long after December is gone?

The next generation is coming. You may as well leave them something to work with.
