I stand to say that women supporting women is a movement and not a myth.
Oxford dictionary defines myth as a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people or explaining a natural or social phenomenon and typically involving supernatural beings or events. It’s also a widely held but false belief or idea. A movement refers to the act, process, or instance of changing physical position, location, or posture. It commonly signifies motion, such as a person walking, or a shift in state, trend, or organised action, like a social or political movement.
These definitions given here explain ‘women supporting women’ as a movement more than a myth.
Women supporting women means:
- Empowerment and Solidarity: It’s about women breaking down barriers that others cannot see, uplifting each other, and creating networks of strength and shared success. This solidarity transmutes challenges into opportunities and promotes environments where women can flourish together.
- Political & Social Impact: Women’s movements have historically driven global and national action on gender equality, influencing political participation, leadership, and policy reforms.
Sometimes “women supporting women” is used as a slogan without structural action, making it feel performative rather than transformative.
In my role and personal life, I am committed to driving progress for women by taking concrete actions that promote gender equality and empower women in the workplace and beyond.
1. Combating Gender-Based Violence and Discrimination:
I actively advocate against gender-based violence and harmful stereotypes by launching and supporting campaigns that challenge discriminatory social norms. I am dedicated to holding leadership accountable, whether in the workplace or within faith communities, to ensure they prioritize preventing sexual harassment and discrimination. By fostering safe and inclusive environments, I strive to create spaces where women feel protected, respected, and empowered to thrive.
2. Enabling Education and Skill Development:
I am passionate about promoting lifelong learning opportunities for women, particularly those navigating career transitions. I actively support continuous learning and skills development, especially for women re-entering the workforce after maternity leave or seeking to advance their careers. By championing accessible education and training, I aim to bridge skills gaps, enhance women’s employability, and foster their economic independence.
Through these actions—both big and small—I am committed to accelerating meaningful change for women, ensuring they have equal opportunities to succeed, grow, and lead in all spheres of life.
