As International Men’s Day (IMD) approaches, the familiar sentiment resurfaces: why aren’t men celebrated as much as women? The answer lies in our own hands. We must take the initiative to acknowledge and celebrate ourselves. If we don’t say “here I am,” no one else will say “there you are.”
Rather than waiting for recognition, men must create and claim spaces that honour their contributions. The origins of International Women’s Day show how women championed their own cause. Similarly, men must advocate for themselves, highlighting their roles, struggles, and achievements.
This IMD, let’s spotlight the real issues men face: abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence. Let’s move beyond the “guy-man” culture that discourages vulnerability. We need safe spaces where men can express themselves without fear of judgment.
