The phrase “blow your trumpet” reminds us that self-recognition is not only acceptable, but also necessary. As International Men’s Day (IMD) approaches, the familiar sentiment resurfaces: why aren’t men celebrated as much as women? The answer lies in our own hands. We must take the initiative to acknowledge and celebrate ourselves. If we don’t say “here I am,” no one else will say “there you are.”

Rather than waiting for recognition, men must create and claim spaces that honour their contributions. The origins of International Women’s Day show how women championed their own cause. Similarly, men must advocate for themselves, highlighting their roles, struggles, and achievements.

This IMD, let’s spotlight the real issues men face: abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence. Let’s move beyond the “guy-man” culture that discourages vulnerability. We need safe spaces where men can express themselves without fear of judgment.

International Men’s Day is built on six key pillars:

  • Promoting positive male role models, not just celebrities, but everyday men leading honest lives.
  • Celebrating men’s positive contributions to society, family, and the environment.
  • Focusing on men’s health and well-being, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual.
  • Addressing discrimination against men in social services, social attitudes, expectations and law.
  • Improving gender relations and promoting equality.
  • Creating a safer, more inclusive world where everyone can thrive.

To all men reading this: Happy International Men’s Day. Celebrate yourself. Support one another.
