The Breakup Playlist

Good things don’t last forever.

As beautiful as love is, it’s got a life span. So your significant other has realized they can go soar their oats in the world, or you feel that Netflix and Chill with them is literally chilly because they now act cold around you.

All of this ends in a breakup that might be accompanied by heartbreak and in some cases, eventual heartlessness. It could even be worse, with Valentine around the corner and lovers crooning sweet nothings into each other’s ears everywhere you go. So here’s a playlist curated by HH People if your heart is in distress this valentine’s day. If you are happily in love, you may also simply enjoy some on our play list.

  • Lindsey – The Letter

You’re hurting deep and your insides feel like your arteries are drowning in vinegar but because of your good home training, you smile and keep your face straight and say, “Go in peace.” Jos-born Lindsey shows you how best to do that, with this alternative soul number that will tug at your heartstrings in a minute.

  • James Blunt – Goodbye My Lover

Sing along to the chorus ‘Goodbye my lover, goodbye my friend’ in your pyjamas and socks with your hands across your heart in your best imitation of Mr. Blunt, with a bowl of hot pap and spicy akara close by.

  • Toni Braxton – Un-Break My Heart

“Un-break my heart. Say you love me again” Enough said. It’s so sad you want to crawl in and live inside this song but please listen without any sharp objects nearby.

  • Eamon – (I Don’t Want You Back)

Rage is getting the better of you so it might just be okay to let it all out and mutter all the unprintables. Let Eamon show you how.

  • Jasmine Sullivan – Bust Your Windows

Sometimes channeling your inner Agbero can be the cure for your broken heart. This song will provide the perfect ‘enabling environment’, in HHspeak, for you to flex your muscles and do collateral damage. Not that we encourage it.

  • Sarkodie ft. Efya – Where Did I Go Wrong

Ghanaian superstar, Sarkodie is known for his tongue-twisting style but when love deals you a hard blow, even your speech can stutter. This duet with songbird Efya is our African version of Sinnead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares to You.

  • Chris Brown – Deuces

You’re over your ex and you’re now with someone who’s got less drama. So you gloat over what is actually their loss, with this song as an inspiration.

  • Gotye – Somebody That I Used to Know

Perhaps the biggest breakup anthem this side of the universe in recent years, Gotye’s breakout hit can be your companion through the five stages of grief and an antidote for all the wrongdoing against you.

  • Skeeter Davis – The End of the World

Her country twang makes this song all the more sadder but Skeeter Davis isn’t apologetic for comparing the end of her relationship to the end of life on Earth. And you shouldn’t too because you’ll meet someone better eventually.

  • Adele – Someone Like You

Heartbreak can often be the start of something even better, like a more awesome relationship or a Grammy-award winning album. You can have your pick or grab both, like Adele.
