NCCN Analysis of World Bank Doing Business 2016

The World Bank released the 2016 Doing Business Report. From its inception in 2003, the report has assessed the ease of opening and running a small to medium sized business in a regulatory environment. Particular focus is given to the state of the regulatory system, efficacy of the bureaucracy, and the nature of business governance.

The Doing Business Report is a mainstay in national competitiveness benchmarking. Investors pay particular credence to the report’s output, particularly in their assessment of investment and credit risk across different business environments. It provides investors with insight to regulatory constraints and enhancements they are likely to face in that economy.

This year’s report adds new measurements in the areas of dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, enforcing contracts, and labour market regulation. The report measures more than one city for countries with a population of over a 10 million people. Nigeria assessment covers Lagos and Kano. Nigeria moved up one position in the report, ranking 169 out of 189 countries (compared to 170 in 2014).The improvements, however marginal, represent a move in the right direction (43.56 in 2015 to 44.69 in 2016).
