This hotel has quite a nefarious reputation, as a lot of guests who check in never check out.

One of such guests was Elisa Lam, whose passing caused a major disruption especially after a chilling video of her last minutes in the hotel went viral. There were stories and speculations, but one rumour was consistent, she had played the Korean Elevator Game. What made this rumour more believable was the fact that she was of Korean descent.

I was intrigued!

So, I looked up the Elevator game. It seemed pretty easy and very straight forward (not).

You find a building with over 10 floors and get into the elevator on the ground floor ALONE.

Press the button for the fourth floor, but remain in the elevator and press the button for the second floor.

On the second floor, press the button for the sixth floor.

On the sixth floor and press the button for the second floor again.

On the second floor, press the button for the tenth floor.

On the tenth floor, don’t get confused as you press the button for the fifth floor.

Now on the fifth floor,a young woman may enter the elevator. Do not look at her; do not speak to her.

Press the button for the first floor. If the elevator begins ascending to the tenth floorinstead of descending to the first, you may proceed. If the elevator descends to the first floor, exit as soon as the doors open. Do not look back. Do not speak.

If you happen to reach the tenth floor, you may choose to get off, and the woman will ask you, “Where are you going?” Do NOT answer her. Do NOT look at her.

You will know whether you have arrived at the Otherworld by one indication, and one indication only: The only person present should be YOU.

I was so excited by it, I love to live on the edge.

I went on to scour the internet for reviews of people who had tried this; no one seemed brave enough to pull it off. This was my chance to find out if there really are things I cannot see.

I went in search of an accessible tall building one fine evening (this was the hardest part of my quest), I got on to the elevator, but someone got in with me. Drat! Four tries later, I was alone. This was my chance.

My heart was beating fast. My palms were sweaty. I wondered if I should record a video of my experience, just in case, but I remembered reading that the game doesn’t work when electronic devices are present. How convenient.

I went up to the fourth floor, my breath was getting short and fast. The elevator doors opened. No lady was there. Whew! I pressed the button for the second floor, no one there either. I was thinking of how the internet is filled with rubbish while I pressed for the sixth floor, but the doors opened this time, I could have sworn I saw the lights flicker! Gulp I pressed the button for the second floor again. This time, the lights DEFINITELY flickered. I pressed for the tenth floor. I began to pray, in every holy deity’s name. I wanted to quit, but mama didn’t raise no punk!

On the tenth floor, I pressed for the fifth floor.

This was it. I was going to meet my maker. I started asking myself questions “is there life after death?” “Should I have believed in the immaculate conception?” “Is it too late to give my life to Christ?” “how did the snake swallow NGN36 million”?

I heard a ding. I was on the fifth floor.

The doors were opening, my heart was beating fast. My head was pounding, I was seeing spots.

There was no one there. Lol. I’m an idiot, I thought to myself.

I pressed the button for the tenth floor again.

“ARE YOU LOST?”, I heard a lady ask as the doors began to close.

I went into cardiac arrest.

I didn’t hear what she asked next, I was busy passing out as she walked up to the elevator and stopped the doors by pushing them back.

This is it, I thought. Goodbye fans and friends, I am off to the great beyond.

As I was putting all my affairs together in my head, my sight came back slowly. She asked again “Madam, are you lost?”

I looked at her properly. Why is a with wearing a skirt suit with a name tag that says manager?

“oh”, I said. “You are the manager here?”.

My voice was weak.

She looked at me like I was a loony. “Ah yes.”

“I was just using Google maps to look for my friend, but it was taking me to different floors,” I said.

Yep! I was definitely loony, I thought.

“I am leaving now,” I blabbered as I pressed the button for the ground floor. “Thank you”.

I left the building, vowing to NEVER EVER try any rubbish like that again. I think I have high BP now. :’(

By Moyo Awotile Recently, I was researching something (don’t ask what) and I stumbled upon the Cecil Hotel, presently known as Stay on Main, located in Downtown Los Angeles.
