We went to Kwame Nkrumah University together. He was a year ahead of me studying Electrical Engineering while I was studying Economics. We were in the same hostel and attended the same student fellowship. We were very good friends. In fact, he was my closest male friend at the time.

Then he left for his Master’s degree and I was still in school. When I graduated in 2013 we started dating officially. It was a long-distance relationship throughout. I was back in Nigeria and he was in the UK, but we kept talking via Skype, etc. Right now, he is doing his PhD in the UK and rounding up already.

Moyo:

Mine is typical of me. I was in my house someday in March 2016 and I was going through a heartbreak. Then I went on Instagram and saw this guy that looks like my ex and he had a nice smile. My cousin was in the house and I showed her the guy’s picture and she said knowing how I am, we will probably start dating soon.

So I scanned his Instagram page and I found that we had a mutual friend – my family friend. I buzzed her and asked her if she knew him and she said she thinks he had a girlfriend. She buzzed him anyway and later found out that he and his girlfriend had problems at the time.

Anyway, I did not think I wanted drama so I let it go. However, I followed him online and he followed me back.

That weekend, my friends and I went out and there was a problem at the bar so they sent us out. I was angry and I went on Twitter and tweeted “I need a hug right now” and he put an e-hug. Then I slid into his DM and we conversed.

From that moment, we have not stopped talking.

What was the moment you knew he was the one?

Nwamaka:

The first time I saw him, he was running for Vice President at school and he was answering his questions well. I was impressed. I was in the drama group in the church and he was also in the same group but he had left. But the day I was introduced as the leader of the drama group, he told me later that when he saw me, he said he would have to join the drama meeting again.

We had issues due to the presence of his girlfriend and one day, it was my birthday and he brought two cakes, but then his girlfriend came in as well as she was my classmate. It was awkward. Somehow, I did not want the drama so we stopped hanging out.

Then one day, he sent me a birthday message and I ignored him. Much later, I called him during my exams because of it was hard and then we started talking again.

And that’s how we officially started talking.

What do you like about him?

Moyo:

I laugh every day. I am pessimistic; he is optimistic. I have really poor financial management skills; he has great financial skills. He is just everything I am not.

He keeps me alive.

Nwamaka:

We are best friends and he is an absolute comedian. I am very structured but he is spontaneous and he is everybody’s friend. He is very generous but I can’t say the same about myself.

He is very supportive of all my dreams. He ough my blog posts. He is selfless; he always thinks about me. When I was travelling for my UN internship, he gave me his MacBook because my laptop was bad.

How did he pop the question?

Moyo:

On the 30th of December, he went for a wedding and he did not take me but he went with his guys and he was pretty happy. I was angry as I wanted to go out. So, I blocked him on Instagram. I was down and bored.

Then the next day, 31st, my mum went to her friend’s house. Around 1pm, he called me that he was bringing stuff for my mum. Around 6pm, I wanted to go out and eat. As I was driving out he was driving in. I turned around and he came down with the stuff he brought. He went in and I pointed out where to drop the things. Then when I turned back to ask him if he was ready, he was on his knee, saying things that I could not hear. His voice was shaking but he grabbed my finger and put on the ring. He did not stop shaking.

Nwamaka:

It was not entirely surprising as we had planned to do the main introduction in December. It was in a Lekki restaurant. We went for dinner on the 23rd evening. I was thinking that this has to be the day he proposes so I made fine hair and fine clothes and he was not proposing. Then I said let’s go look at the water and nothing was happening.

Then on the way home, he asked me to sit closer to him. He then said I had nice fingers and I asked him “who compliments someone’s fingers?”

But then he slipped the ring onto my finger.

Plans for Honeymoon and wedding decor?

Moyo:

I am blank. He likes Venice, Cyprus. I went to Egypt in December and I loved it. That will not be bad. For the wedding, I would probably go for a black and gold theme.

Nwamaka:

I don’t have a favourite colour. For my honeymoon, somewhere in Europe.

Congratulations ladies!
