Tony Elumelu Awarded “2017 Philanthropist of the Year” by Per Second News
Earlier today, February 28, 2018, Chairman, Heirs Holdings and Founder, Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony O. Elumelu was awarded 2017 Philanthropist of the year by media publisher, Per Second News.
The event, which was held at Southern Sun Hotel, celebrated Elumelu’s contribution to the growth of entrepreneurship and the advancement of the African continent through his Foundation’s activities and programmes. Also present were a few beneficiaries of the Foundation’s entrepreneurship programme who shared the vision of their businesses with the audience.
Speaking at the event, Publisher, Per Second News, Femi Soneye commended Elumelu’s efforts in eradicating poverty in Africa. “We are here to celebrate the sacrifice, creativity and love for others. The art of philanthropy is not so difficult to come by but the society we live in makes it difficult and this is why we are celebrating Tony Elumelu,” he said.
On receiving his award, Elumelu spoke on the need to change the dynamic of giving back to society and philanthropy from one of dependence to one of self-sustenance, addressing the audience on the urgent need for the youth to look beyond the government for job creation. “We need to start giving in a manner that creates sustenance, self-reliance and will help to eradicate poverty”.
Calling on other partners to support the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s mission to support more entrepreneurs, Elumelu stated, “We are now changing the narrative about development in Africa and people can now begin to partner with us to impact more people”.
